XYZ Mafia,90 arresti per impedire rinascita asse Palermo-Usa

XYZ ROMA/PALERMO - I magistrati della Procura distrettuale di New York e i
pm della Direzione distrettuale antimafia (Dda) di Palermo hanno
disposto 90 provvedimenti restrittivi, nell'ambito di un'operazione
per impedire la riorganizzazione dell'asse Palermo-New York di Cosa
Nostra e lo scatenarsi di una nuova guerra di mafia in Sicilia.

XYZ Finora le persone arrestate nell'ambito dell'operazione "Old Bridge",
illustrata oggi nel corso di una conferenza stampa al Viminale, sono
77, di cui 23 a Palermo - alcune delle quali erano gia' in carcere - e
54 nell'area di New York.

XYZ Tra gli arrestati negli Stati Uniti figurano i tre piu' importanti
esponenti della famiglia Gambino non ancora in carcere: vicecapo,
sottocapo e consigliere.

XYZ I magistrati palermitani hanno emesso 29 provvedimenti. L'Eastern
District di New York ne ha emessi altri 60 circa: 61 secondo la
polizia italiana, 62 invece secondo fonti Usa.  Tra i reati contestati
a vario titolo figurano quelli di associazione a delinquere di tipo
mafioso, omicidio ed estorsione.






XYZ Orthodox church elects new leader

XYZ ATHENS, Greece - A low-key bishop described as an "enlightened
conservative" was chosen by senior clergy Thursday to lead Greece's
powerful Orthodox Church.

XYZ Church bells rang out and the lights outside Athens Cathedral were
switched on to signal the election of Metropolitan Bishop Ieronymos
of Thebes as the successor to the late Archbishop Christodoulos.

XYZ Within an hour of the vote, Ieronymos, 70, appeared on the balcony of
the archbishop's office before cheering crowds with the three other
bishops who were being considered.

XYZ "In whichever position the church appoints us, no matter how high, we
must know that our leader is Christ," the archbishop-elect said.
His enthronement ceremony is expected to be held Feb. 16.

XYZ The restrained Ieronymos is likely to differ considerably in style
from the charismatic and often combative Christodoulos, who died last
month of cancer at age 69. But Ieronymos is expected to continue his
predecessor's effort to heal the centuries-old rift with the Roman
Catholic Church.
